Reinforced Earth
(RE / MSE) Wall

A Reinforced Earth (RE) or Mechanically Stabilized Earth (MSE) wall is a retaining structure built by reinforcing compacted soil with horizontal layers of galvanized steel strips or high-strength geogrid, then facing the structure with precast concrete panels. The reinforcement gives ordinary backfill the tensile strength to stand at a steep, near-vertical face — something soil cannot do on its own.

This is fundamentally different from a revetment or riprap wall. An RR Wall protects a sloped surface from water erosion. An RE/MSE wall resists the lateral earth pressure of a vertical embankment face — the same structural role traditionally filled by a reinforced-concrete cantilever wall, but built faster, with a smaller footprint, and at lower cost on most projects.

In Bangladesh, RE/MSE wall systems are increasingly specified for elevated expressway ramps, highway interchange approaches, bridge abutments and railway formation widening — where land take is restricted and construction speed matters. Because the structure tolerates differential settlement far better than rigid concrete walls, it performs well on the Bengal Delta's soft alluvial soils.
